In the 1950's the Sunshine Coast Region was renamed from "the Near North Coast" to help attract tourists and investment to the area
- During the 1830s to 1840s, the district became home to numerous runaway convicts from the nearby Moreton Bay penal colony
- Pastoral, timber, farming and tourism are the major industries of the region.
