The town's name originated from the indigenous term "gulum" or "kulum," meaning "blunt" or "headless," in reference to Mount Coolum's shape
- It was renamed from Potts Point to Alexandra Headland in honour of Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII, in 1901.
- Grainger Ward made the first land selection in Coolum in 1871 - a pastoral lease of 255 hectares for 300 head of cattle.
