Greetings & Salutations,
The premise for this month-long trip was to spend a week in Christchurch participating in the 22nd Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival with my hometown team - the Alice Springs Dingoes.
As with most trips I've taken of late, whilst the destination is often the focus, it’s the journey that can be most memorable and to that effect - ET & Trina, Josie and Shazza were a large portion in making my Kiwi Kruizin' travels an awesome experience.
For five people to meander all over the North Island and South Island in an at times cramped and noisy mobile metal box for a month and for them to remain great mates at the end of it is testament to how we travel - with great humour ..... and alcohol!
We were able to see and accomplish a great deal with what New Zealand had to offer, in regards tallest / widest / longest / oldest / steepest, that was all wrapped up in some stunning and spectacular scenery - well worth the visit.
That's not to say we didn't have our trials and tribulations along the way with vehicles, medical matters, goods & services, but if the one item of negativity that sticks in ones mind for the entire trip, was that we were not able to achieve the goal of having a alcohol free day - then I reckon you've had a great trip.
Against what most people thought was my better judgement, by far the highlight of the trip - I was able to have a run with the boys for the first time, since I was injured at work on September 3rd, 2011.
The watershed moment when running out to face the All Kyoto Senior Ma-I-Ko team from Japan was simple immeasurable for me. The smile on my dial after the second match against combined Associació Veterans Rugby Barcelona & The Gaucho could not be removed by chisel nor chainsaw, but the two broken ribs did remind me of my own mortality.
All in all, you couldn't have asked for a better bunch of lunatics to spend a month with and I look forward to it to see what Denver, Colorado in 2020 brings.
Here's a couple of statistics on the trip:
