Beenleigh was first colonised in the 1860s by farmers John Davy and Frank Gooding, who named their sugarcane plantation Beenleigh
- The town was built on sugar and home to Australia's oldest rum distillery, built in 1864
- The town was the terminus for the Beenleigh railway line, which first opened in 1885
