The earliest known European incursion into the area was by Irish-born explorer and prospector James Mulligan in 1875

• Lush rainforest once covered the region. However, over the generations, these areas have been repurposed.
• Pastoral, cropping, mining, tourism and residential activities are now the backbone of the area.
