Cooktown is at the mouth of the Endeavour River, where Captain James Cook beached his ship, the Endeavour, for repairs in 1770

• The area contains a large proportion of the 3,000 plant species, and the more than 500 terrestrial vertebrates
• The first recorded sighting of kangaroos by Europeans was on the adjacent Grassy Hill
