In 1770, British Captain James Cookr sailed past at some distance to the east, naming the landfall Mount Hinchinbrook without realising that it was an island
- In 1843, Captain Blackwood on HMS Fly was able to verify that it was a distinct landmass, renaming it Hinchinbrook Island.
- The Hinchinbrook Island Wilderness Lodge closed in 2010 as a result of financial difficulties
