Cassowary Coast Region
The first Europeans settled in the area in January 1864 in order to create a port initially called "Port Hinchinbrook"
- Later in 1864 it was renamed Cardwell by explorer George Elphinstone Dalrymple after Edward Cardwell, 1st Viscount Cardwell.
- The Cardwell Bush Telegraph Heritage Centre is one of the oldest buildings in North Queensland.
