Founded by 175 people on July 15th 1689, the town of Santa Clara in the Villa Clara province is probably more well known for the adjacent Che Guevara Monument and Mausoleum.
For Cubans, the towns historical significance is that it was the site of the last battle of the Cuban Revolution in which two guerrilla columns, one led by Che Guevara and the other by Camilo Cienfuegos, attacked the city and captured it by the afternoon of December 31, 1958.
This victory for Castro's troops is seen as the decisive moment in the Cuban Revolution, which toppled the Fulgencio Batista government, as he fled Cuba less than 12 hours later.
