Ernesto “Che” Guevara Mausoleum

Sunday April 14th, 2019

We spent an hour and a half at the Conjunto Escultórico Memorial Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara (Ernesto “Che” Guevara Mausoleum), just outside the town of Santa Clara in the Villa Clara province.

Che was the Argentine born doctor, who became one of the heroes of the Cuban Revolution and right hand man to Fidel Castro, left Cuba in 1965 to "to offer his knowledge and experience as a guerrilla" to Congo and then Boliva, where he was gunned down while captured, under the orders of Bolivian President René Barrientos.

Che's execution was made to look like he was killed in battle so "there could be no possibility for Guevara to escape from prison and to also prevent the drama of a public trial where adverse publicity might occur."

On October 17, 1997, Guevara's remains along with those of six of his fellow combatants, were laid to rest with military honours in the mausoleum.
