DAY 12b
ROUNDWOOD (County Wicklow, IRL)
Tuesday September 9th, 2008
TODAYS MILEAGE – 48 miles or 77 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 12140 miles or 19573 kilometres
Our hosts from the B&B, Anne and Tony, suggested a day of traversing the Wicklow Mountains National Park area would be the thing to do.
For my mind, that's the thing with staying B&B's, you get free intimate local knowledge that is usually spot on the money. There was no exception to the rule here.
Rather than taking all three cars, Jungle and myself jumped in with Marie & Roscoe and we all headed to our first port of call, the town of Roundwood, which is only a short 10 mile (16 kilometre) drive from where we were staying. As we arrived in town, we happened across what is reported to be the highest pub in all of Ireland. As you do in a thriving democracy, we all agreed that what better way to start out the day, than a pint at such a storied establishment – it was after 11AM somewhere after all.
Unfortunately for us, this was also the day that some 92 year old dear, who went toes up in the birdcage, had her funeral. Literally the whole town and most of the surrounding environs were attending her funeral, so everything was closed.
No matter, we’ll push on to Sally Gap for a bit of a butchers hook and stop on the boomerang trip home.
