I hadn't heard of the Natural Bridge, but with one of my best mates "Philthy" Phil Wilkins being a local, we decided to grab our camera gear and put some miles on the rental car for shit's & giggles.
Roughly 47 kilometres (29 miles) from Surfers Paradise/Gold Coast or 107 kilometres (66 miles) from Brisbane, and nestled up against the Queensland/New South Wales border, you'll come across the Springbrook National Park.
Natural Bridge is in the western part of Springbrook National Park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Apparently the place is very popular with walkers and bird lovers during the day, but fortunatley for us, we basically had the place to ourselves.
The park's Natural Bridge section features a picturesque rock formation, formed by the force of the waterfall over the basalt cave. It is easily accessible from the Nerang-Murwillumbah Road car park and it is well worth the visit.
Follow the easy one-kilometre circuit and descend through the ancient Gondwana rainforest to the Natural Bridge rock arch. The Hoop pines from surrounding forests are living relics of the Jurassic Age, 180 million years ago. If you're there at night, the cave comes alive with the tiny green lights of thousands of nocturnal glow-worms, and the silent wings of microbats. Glow-worms are visible year-round, but their display is significantly reduced during the winter months.
