Paronella Park was built in the 1930s by José Paronella, a Spanish immigrant, who sailed from his homeland of Catalonia - Spain, in northern Spain to plan a life for himself and his fiancée Matilda.


José travelled to Ingham, Queensland, Australia worked hard for 11 years, creating his wealth by buying, improving, and selling cane farms


Upon returning to Spain, Paronella discovered that Matilda had married another man and being that he was determined to sail back with a bride, José proposed to Margarita, Matilda's younger sister, to which he set about buiding the 13 acres (5.3 hectare) site in recogniton of his bride - Margarita.
