5 blocks north of the Zócalo, past the Callejón de los Milagros (Alley of Miracles) and across the Plaza de Santo Domingo, you can't help but running into the Rectoría de Santo Domingo de Guzmán and its La Iglesia de Santo Domingo (Church of Santo Domingo).
Officially known as the Señor de la Expiración Chapel, this current building is actually the third church constructed on the Santo Domingo site. The first was built and consecrated in 1590, but poor construction, soft soil and earthquakes saw the second church being built between 1556 and 1571. The current church begun construction in 1717 and was completed in 1736.
The Plaza de Santo Domingo (Plaza San Domingo) has an interesting history in itself - the area is well known for the falsification of documents.
According to the intelligence division of the Policia Judicial of the Distrito Federal, in addition to the 242 print shops that operate legally in this zone, there have identified 614 incidences of printers set up to falsify documents in the various apartments and other living quarters that surround this area.
