Greetings & Salutations,
As with many single industry towns, the best thing out of Whyalla is the Lincoln Highway and after 6 days, I was more than happy to avail myself to a small amount of the 327 kilometre (203 mile) bitumen ribbon of Australia's 4th largest state - South Australia.
If the truth be told, my sister were not the closet of siblings, but her passing opened my eyes to the human cost of addiction, in her case - chronic alcoholism, which had both saddened and troubled me. Unfortunately, I have attended way too many funerals over the years and Sandy's was a particularly tough one for a range of reasons - most of which had to do with people’s behaviours. For mind, if it weren’t for my older brother (Sandy's twin) and his wife being there, they'd be digging a few more holes in the graveyard for my sisters so called "friends".
After nearly a week of basically being on the go dealing with her son, Public Trustees, governmental agencies, Police, coroner, hospital, funeral directors, banks and public utilities, the 4 hour 392 kilometre (244 mile) drive back to Adelaide was a welcome reprieve that afforded me the solitude and space to rationally review the past week and to put everything in perspective, while clearing my head.
At the end of the day, life continues on and while we mourn those we have lost ..... we can still celebrate their living.
