Saturday May 5th, 2018
TODAYS MILEAGE – 133 miles or 214 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 4,802 miles or 7,728 kilometres
On the Waiau River, just outside the hamlet of Clifden, we came across this pedestrian walk bridge constructed of twenty-seven steel cables, attached to concrete pillars (clad to resemble stone pillars), which still has its historic wooden decking.
The 115.5 metre (379 foot) Clifden Suspension Bridge was built in 1898-99 to replace a punt which had operated since the early days of settlement and is New Zealand's longest wooden suspension bridge.
