DAY 18f
Week 3
HAAST ~ Knights Point Lookout (West Coast, NZL)
Tuesday May 1st, 2018
TODAYS MILEAGE – 228 miles or 367 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 4,115 miles or 6,622 kilometres
We stopped at Knights Point Lookout, about 17 miles (27 kilometres) north of the drive-by town of Haast, to take in the views out over the Tasman Sea.
Knights Point got its name, not from the visiting politicians who wanted it to be named after a senior official of the Ministry of Works employed in the head office in Wellington, but it was construction crew who fronted the delegation from Wellington and said that the area had already been named Knight's Point. The officials inquired who "Knight" was and were informed that he was the surveyor's dog. Knight's Point was named after Norman McGeorge's dog Knight.
As it was only a short 20 minute drive into Haast, we decided to stop for a pretty ordinary and ultimately forgettable effort from the Fantail Cafe.
