As experienced with my previous visits to Hong Kong, the night lights attract people like moths drawn to a flame and this visit was no different. I spent the best part of the evening just taking it all in.
In a bit of a reality check, I was walking home from the "Temple Street Night Markets" just off Jordan Road, when I see a bloke step off the footpath on to Nathan Road and literally face plant into the concrete road. Nobody moves to help this fella and as I walk up to him, I see he's leaking a fair amount of claret from his head.
I roll him over to check him out and find he's opened up a couple of deep wounds above his eyebrow, on the bridge of his nose and on the top of his lip. With a bit of help from the gathering crowd, I managed to get a couple of hankies to stem the blood flow and got a local to call an ambulance, who arrived in about 10 minutes and carted him off.
Both he and his wife were really grateful for the assistance, but ringing in my ears was what our guide said about people not wanting to help an injured party, as there are no "Good Samaritan" laws in China. All three attending Ambo's wanted my details, but as soon as they loaded him up, I headed on up Nathan Street to my hotel, after a heartfelt hug from the wife.
It's a sad day if people will not help an injured party for fear of being hauled before the courts.
