A cold, drizzling, cloudy and windy morning greeted us at the the world's largest hydropower project - the "Three Gorges Dam", but you could not help but be in awe of the sheer scale of one the largest engineering projects ever undertaken.

The world's largest hydroelectric dam, which generates 11 times as much power as the Hoover Dam, has some pretty interesting facts associated with it -

DAM PROJECT:

  • $37 billion to build
  • 1.3 million people were relocated
  • 13 cities, 140 towns and more than 1,600 villages have been submerged

  • DAM & SPILLWAYS:

  • Height 181 metres (594 feet)
  • Length 2.3 kilometres (1.4 miles)
  • Width (crest) 40 metres (131 feet)
  • Width (base) 115 metres (377 feet)
  • Spillway capacity 116,000 m3/s (4,100,000 cu ft/s)

  • RESERVOIR:

  • Total capacity 39.3 km3 (9.43 cu mi)
  • Catchment area 1,000,000 km2 (390,000 mi²)
  • Surface area 1,084 km2 (419 mi²)
  • Maximum length 600 kilometres (370 miles)

  • Any way you look at it, that's some impressive numbers.
