DAY 15c

ROAD C35 ~ Herero Craft Market (Erongo, NAM)

Friday November 25th, 2016

TODAYS MILEAGE – 288 miles or 463 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 14712 miles or 23677 kilometres

Just on the borders of the Erongo and Kunene regions, we stopped to check out the Herero Craft Market. As markets go, it was pretty basic, with homemade knick-knacks and tourist trinkets, but of more interest to me were the people.

The Herero people are traditionally cattle/livestock farmers, who were basically run off their land during the German colonization beginning in 1892, culminating in the German-Herero conflict of 1904–07.

The hardest thing to grasp is that this kind of "colonization" happened all across Africa in various forms. Sadly, it even occurs today with one tribe ruling others, but the politicians have a more politically correct name for it - civil unrest.
