Queenstown is the largest town on Tasmania's West Coast and is the home of the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Company and the West Coast Wilderness Railway.
The township of Queenstown was originally developed to service the booming copper fields of Mt Lyell. There were heated discussions as to where the town should be sited in the early years, with the original town situated adjacent to the huge smelters of the old Mt Lyell Company. This town was named Penghana, but much of it was destroyed by a bush fire in 1896.
The current location of the township of Queenstown was quickly developed a kilometre or so down the Queen River Valley, around the then new ABT Railway Station and services the mining industry in the nearby mines of Rosebery, Renison Bell, Henty Gold Mine and of course, Mt Lyell, (now Copper Mines of Tasmania).
