Port Arthur is one of the 11 penal sites constituting the Australian Convict Sites, being a World Heritage properties.
In 1775 England stopped transporting its criminals to America and Australia became the replacement destination 3 years later. Port Arthur come on line in 1833 for the hardest of convicted British criminals and those who were secondary offenders, in that they re-offended after their arrival in Australia. Rebellious personalities from other convict stations were also sent here, as Port Arthur had some of the strictest security measures of the entire British penal system.
