DAY 23
Week 4
MILDURA (Victoria, AUS) to SMOKY BAY (South Australia, AUS)
via CADELL, SPALDING, PORT PIRIE & KIMBA (South Australia, AUS)
Tuesday October 5th, 2010
TODAYS MILEAGE – 622 miles or 1001 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 3178 miles or 5114 kilometres
We're up at sparrows fart, for another 1000 plus kilometre day.
We crossed the Victoria/South Australia border and stopped off in Renmark to catch up with a good mate of mine Roey. I hadn't seen him in years, so it was great to say G'day and check out his new digs.
From there we crossed the Murray River via ferry at Cadell (South Australia) and head Northwest to go around the top of Spencer Gulf. A quick pub lunch in Port Pirie (South Australia) and we were headed West out to Smoky Bay (South Australia).
I've been visiting Port Pirie (South Australia) since I was a kid and if the truth be told, it's still the same shithole as I remember, just a little bigger now. When I say a quick visit for lunch, I really meant it. I smashed down a steak sanger at the Family Hotel Bar & Grill and then had the best view in town - in my rear view mirror.
Around mid-afternoon I was all about equality between the sexes, so after fuelling up at Kimba (South Australia), I handed the steering wheel over to Yvonne to have a crack. Apart from driving off from the servo on the wrong side of the road, she quickly adjusted to driving on the correct side and took us the 174 kilometres (108 miles) into Poochera (South Australia), which is where we turned off for Smoky Bay (South Australia).
As the sun was just about to start setting, I took the wheel again for the 117 kilometre (73 mile) leg into Smoky, with the sun glaring directly in our eyes. We spent the next 40 or so minutes travelling at 30-40 KPH (15-25 MPH), even slowing to a walk at times, but all was good when we parked up outside Darky & Jude's shed and started knocking the froth off a couple of coldies.
