Loch Ness is a large, deep, freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extending for approximately 23 miles (37 kilometres) southwest of Inverness. Its surface is 52 feet (15.8 metres) above sea level. Water visibility is exceptionally low due to a high peat content in the surrounding soil.

Loch Ness is probably best known for the alleged sightings of the legendary Loch Ness Monster, also known as "Nessie".

Loch Ness is the second largest Scottish loch by surface area at 22 square miles (57 square kilometres) after Loch Lomond, and the second deepest after Loch Morar and as such, is the largest Loch by volume. Its deepest point is 754 feet (230 metres) and it contains more fresh water than all lakes in England and Wales combined.
