DAY 109
Week 16
KISSIMMEE (Florida, USA) to KEY WEST (Florida, USA)
Saturday October 7th, 2006
TODAYS MILEAGE – 407 miles or 655 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 14675 miles or 23617 kilometres
Today's directions are easy – head South until you hit water!!!
I got up at sparrows fart, packed up, hit the road around 7AM and headed for the Southern most point of the the continental United States.
I lost a couple of hours due to traffic snarls around a fatal accident and another accident when sideswiped a safety barrier. Road tolls ran another $15.00, but don't get me started on that subject again.
Key West is not a big island, only 4 miles across and it has the tropical feel that I was expecting. Walking the length of Duval Street, which crosses the Southern end of the Key from East to West. The street is littered with bars, souvenir shops, boarding houses and numerous galleries. Not a bad walk, which you will do plenty of as there is minimal street parking. If you can find a parking spot, metered will run 25¢ every 10 minutes or $4.00 per hour in a car park.
As towns go, it would be what you'd expect from a coastal resort destination, except for the homeless sleeping in the doorways of closed businesses. Everything seems to be centered at the Southern part of the Island, for obvious tourist clientele resons.
I found the local Cuban restaurant El Meson de Pepe, after all, we are only 90 miles from Cuba, so I decided to splash out and have a good feed. not that I need one.
Tomorrow, I can only head one direction without getting wet, so North is the way I'll be going.
