DAY 107
Week 16
DAYTONA (Florida, USA)
Thursday October 5th, 2006
TODAYS MILEAGE – 170 miles or 274 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 14268 miles or 22962 kilometres
There's got to be more to Florida than sunshine, palm trees and traffic!!!
Today I just headed up I4 just to go for a drive. I stumbled across Bruce Rossmeyer's Daytona Harley-Davidson, which is reported to be the largest Harley Davidson dealer in the world. I've never visited every Harley dealer in the world, but I'd hazard a guess that a dealer which has it's own hotel and 6 food places in the same complex would have to be up there.
I wondered around there for a while before heading over to Daytona Beach and didn't even bother to get the camera out as it nothing to write home to Mum about. 1970's era high rise hotels and a few palm trees was pretty ordinary to say the least.
I spent several hours checking out one of NASCAR's most famous tracks - the Daytona International Speedway. For $20.00 you got the racetrack museum, IMAX 3D movie and a track tour. Having visited Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier on this trip, I was somewhat underwhelmed by what Daytona had to offer, except for a few of thier interactive displays. The track tour, which they charge $8.25 on it's own, was a complete rip off. You get bundled into a cattle crate and driven over to Victory Lane for a couple of happy snaps and back to the museum.
One good thing came from the visit, I got to see my first 3D IMAX film and it was way cool. I was impressed.
From there it was an hour and a half in traffic through Orlando on my way back to Kissimmee. I just don't get it, why do people put up with this traffic???
