DAY 3c
Week 1
SALEM (Massachusetts, USA)
Saturday May 15th, 1999
TODAYS MILEAGE – 98 miles or 158 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 2378 miles or 3827 kilometres
The coastal city of Salem is a New England bedrock of history and aside from the notorious Salem Witch Trials that took place during 1692 and 1693, it is considered one of the most significant seaports in Puritan American history, including being designated as the birthplace of the U.S. National Guard.
Much of the city's identity is reflective of its role as the location of the Salem witch trials of 1692: Police cars are adorned with witch logos, a local public school is known as the Witchcraft Heights Elementary School, the Salem High School athletic teams are named the Witches; and Gallows Hill, a site of numerous public hangings, is currently used as a playing field for various sports.
