Mount Cavendish & Christchurch Gondola
With Doug, Patrick and myself having no real itinerary set for the day, we decided to head over and ride the 1,100 yards (1 kilometre) in length Christchurch Gondola up to the 1,470 foot (448 metre) summit of Mount Cavendish.
The $30.00 NZD ($19.37 USD) ten minute ride affords you 360-degree views out over the city of Christchurch as well as Lyttelton Harbour, at the north-western end of Banks Peninsula.
Located at the base of the 'Summit Station' is the "Time Tunnel Experience" which is a free trolley car ride through a somewhat interactive reconstruction of the history of the region. If the truth be told, I spent more time waiting in line than actually on the ride ... and it wasn't a busy day by any measure.
Having said that, the attraction is being able to see for miles in any direction and take in a landscape that varies from the mountains to the seas, from virgin scrub to encroaching humanity and clears skies to brooding storm clouds.
