Castelo de São Jorge e restos das cercas de Lisboa
(São Jorge Castle)
Monday July 10th, 2017
Officially it is known as "Castelo de São Jorge e restos das cercas de Lisboa", but the Castelo de São Jorge is a Moorish castle occupying a commanding hilltop position overlooking the historic centre of Lisbon and the Tagus River. At one stage in its history, it had 77 towers and a perimeter of 5,400 metres (17,700 feet).
The castle was the ancient seat of power for Portugal for over 400 years, with much of the present castle dating from the 1920's when a significant restoration project was undertaken.
