PYRAMID HILL
The "More Miles Than Santa" Trip
Sunday December 24th, 2017
Christmas Eve
Pyramid Hill is located about 145 miles (234 km's) north of the Victorian state capital - Melbourne. The town gets its 'bleeding obvious' name from the adjacent 614 foot (187 metre) granite hill, that is the highest point for miles.
Karlie and I started out climbing the Pyramid Hill Golf Club encircled hill to take in the views, that on a clear day like today, went on for miles in any direction you looked.
After picking some groceries for tomorrows Christmas lunch, we grabbed some lunch at the Pyramid Hill Bakery Cafe before heading back to the farm to chuck on some decent threads for a night out in town.
Karlie's dad and I got dropped off at the Vic Hotel for a couple of 'heart starters', as the girls had to sort some stuff out at Karlie's grandmothers place. Just on 5PM we could hear the local CFA "Country Fire Authority" fire truck doing a lap of the town, announcing the imminent arrival of Santa. This cleared the pub out of every man and thier dog, (bear in mind the town’s population is 419 so it was quick, orderly affair), as we were all headed over to the CFA Hall for the annual 'Chook Raffle'.
The 'Chook Raffle' had taken on a legend all of it own. Karlie's dad had no issues with letting us all know that last year he'd won 8 'chooks' and several two litre bottles of soft drinks/soda. Even in the pub prior to the raffle, he was confident in repeating his success, but several locals were gunning for him.
About 3/4's of the way through the raffle, he was asked how he was going "Yeah we got one ..... that's a start" was his reply. The one was actually mine, but I'm more than happy to be representing as “we” after less than 24 hours in town. He finally breaks his drought and wins his one and only chook, only for me to take the final chook the next round. You don't think I gave him some ribbing back at the pub over my effort in doubling his wins?? My efforts seemed trivial compared to the how much he copped from the locals.
After closing the pub, we walked over to Karlie's grandma's place for White Russian's in gravy boats & measuring cups ..... but that's another drinking story!
