Deadwood Deadwood began illegally in the 1870s on land which had been granted to American Indians in the 1868 Treaty of Laramie.
Deadwood became known for its wild and almost lawless reputation, during which time murder was common, inckuding gunman Wild Bill Hickok. The local Mount Moriah Cemetery remains the final resting place of Hickok as well as Calamity Jane.
