Templo de Santo Domingo
Tuesday April 2nd, 2019
Built between 1650 and 1690, the Templo Conventual de Santo Domingo de Guzmán (Temple of Santo Domingo) is a New Spanish Baroque style Roman Catholic church and houses the stunning Capilla del Rosario (Chapel of the Rosary).
After 40 years of work, the chapel was opened and consecrated by Bishop Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz on April 16, 1690 and contains 4½ tons of 23 carat gold leaf used throughout the chapel. In its time, it was considered to be the "eighth wonder of the world".
The amount of gold is impressive, but in all honesty, that church is so not in the same class as Mexico's second largest church, the nearby Catedral de Puebla (Puebla Cathedral).
