Cementerio de Santa Ifigenia

Saturday April 20th, 2019

Located a short 10 minute drive from the centre of town, the Cementerio de Santa Ifigenia (Santa Ifigenia Cemetery) is worth about an hour of your day.

The cemetery holds the remains of most of Cuba’s founding figures and significant people in its history – José Martí , María Magdalena Cabrales Fernández the mother of the nation and just recently - Fidel Castro himself.

Be warned though - those tasked with being rent-a-cops at the site are overly enthusiastic with their jobs. We stopped to the side of the major thoroughfare to change camera lens and were literally set upon by some muppet with a whistle and stick, yet a local was doing the same thing and nothing happened to them.
