With the Sesriem Canyon being literally on our doorstep - 5 kilometres (3 miles) from our campsite, it was relativly easy to go check out the natural canyon carved by the Tsauchab river, that measures about a kilometre (0.6 mile) long and up to 30 meters (100 feet) deep.
The early Afrikaans settlers on the Dorsland Trek, named the canyon after the fact that they had to use six (“ses”) leather straps (“riem”) tied together to create a rope long enough to lower buckets into the canyon below, in order to fetch water.
