The World Heritage listed Volubilis is a partly excavated Berber and Roman city that is commonly considered as the ancient capital of the kingdom of Mauretania.
Initialy founded around the 3rd century BC onward, it grew rapidly and expanded to cover around 42 hectares (100 acres) with a 2.6 kilometres (1.6 miles) of walls protecting the city.
