Saturday December 31st, 2016
The Bab el-Khemis gate is the main fortified access between the Medina and Imperial City of Meknes. The structure was completed in in 1732, 5 years after the death of the king of Morocco Moulay Ismail, who commissioned the gate.
The design of the gate includes Almohad patterns and zellij mosaics of excellent quality. The marble columns were taken from the Roman ruins of Volubilis located 19 miles (30 kilometres) to the north.
