DAY 29c

SOUTH LUANGWA ~ Elephants @ Kapani Lodge (Eastern, ZMB)

Friday December 9th, 2016

TODAYS MILEAGE – 188 miles or 303 kilometres
TRIP MILEAGE – 17091 miles or 27505 kilometres

We had just turned off on to the road to our camp site and noticed a single bull elephant sitting in the bushes. We parked up, turned off the truck and within 5 minutes we had about 30 of the majestic creatures just meandering around the vehicle.

The thing that struck me is that for such a large animal, they can travel in near silence. The only sounds we heard was the sound of rustling tree & bush branches, as they brushed up against them while moving through the scrub. One of our guides mentioned that they could be a silent killer, but they try and avoid conflict by the use of trumpeting and a couple of "warning" charges.
