Located adjacent to the Sossusvlei salt pan area is white claypan of Dead Vlei.
Dead Vlei is surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, the highest reaching 350 metres (1150 feet) on average, named "Big Daddy" or "Crazy Dune". The camel thorn trees that litter the claypan are believed to have died over 900 years ago, are now black because the intense sun has scorched them. Though not petrified, the wood does not decompose because it is so dry.
