I would have to say that standing at the Oklahoma City bombing site, early on frigid morning of clear skies with not a sound to be heard, had an effect on me the really drove home the barbarity of mankind.
I walked the Murrah Federal Building site for best part of three hours, with not a soul in sight and came away with a profound anger as why someone would ever inflict such hurt and pain on innocent people.
